  1. The average American citizen, like the average citizen of most other countries (average being taken to mean the mean average in all material respects) probably can't read let alone think about abstract concepts like democracy. Sad but true.

  2. The media polls are statistically flawed. Registered voters stay away from voting 2:1. The bombardment by 'news media' causes ignorance and apathy, not involvement and research. We don't check facts as portrayed very often, and submit to outlandish propaganda as a matter of course. In my opinion, while 'most American citizens' fear the IRS and jury duty, they turn away from understanding our responsibilities.

  3. Most people don't have a full understanding of how their govt works -- and in America, I'd estimate that most people only have the barest understanding of how the legislative and legal processes actually work -- and most of that is from TV.

As to the duties and obligations of being in a participatory system (whether pure democracy or democratic republic) -- not really. Apathy is much more prevalent than any other emotion, and even of those who participate. most do what they think is right often without considering the long term consequences or the ramifications to others.

  4. under 25:has no idea of anything except what they think they are supposed to have....and they are products of the modern education system that has been fostered on the citizens by liberal intellectuals who have no idea of the real world...over 25:could give a rats patootie less about anything....over 50: just weeps for the future....so how does your question of "a clear understanding of their duties" fit?..it doesnt....

  5. The average citizen seems to have more of an understanding of what they think is owed to them from their country...
