An embarrassing season ends for Rex Ryan
The season has ended for the New York Jets who had looked quite strong contenders of winning their division. The defeat in their season’s finale against the Miami Dolphins came as a big shock for them. However, even worst is the
situation for their head coach who had been quite consistent in with his tall claims and boasts.
The coach had initiated a completely unnecessary war of words by hitting out on the New York Giants. He started claiming the town saying it was his town. He dubbed the Giants as the less better side and claimed that the Jets were
the better side and would beat the Giants. Ryan’s claim did not end with just being better than the Giants. They went on and on from owing the city to becoming the best team in NFL. It could just turn out that he was trying to fuel up his players for a duel
with the Giants and went far too ahead in his claims even though he dared to stand for every word he said. Whatever the reason the claims were surely uncalled for.
Ryan was determined as he spoke to the reporters in a call conference then.
"Quite honestly, I never came here to be little brother to anybody," said Ryan. He also termed any suggestion that the Giants were the better side as ridiculous while talking of how he was here to win and make it to the playoffs.
Ryan didn’t stop short of throwing in the phrase “little brother” to describe the Giants again and again. What he said was sure going to infuriate the Giants fan.
"I know it's going to p**s off every Giants fan to hear this, but here you go. We are the better team. We are the big brother. (Jets are) going to remain the better team for the next 10 years." Ryan had written in his autobiography
which was released early in the year.
Amidst all these claims, he seemed to have forgotten that historically the Giants had proven to be the better side. History does point out to the Jets being the better side and surely anyone would consider the Jets to be the second
best team in town. The Jets and Giants feud goes down to decades with both the teams having played each other 11 times before their last clash. The last four of those games went in favour of the Giants. And that number has now increased to five.
And then all disgrace fell on the coach as his team was routed by the Giants. Rather than taking to face saving, he didn’t stop there. Now his attention was suddenly turned to winning the Super Bowl. How does one describe this
shift in tactic? Maybe it was capitalizing on any opportunity available. However, Ryan had even more embarrassment coming his way. This time it came after losing to a much weaker side; the Dolphins. The defeat saw the Jets eliminated from the playoff picture
and Ryan was found eating up his own words.
Ryan had agreed that he would stand up and be held responsible for each and every word he said but that hasn’t been seen so far. Landing the Jets in a vulnerable position to criticism is what Ryan has done. Was resigning the way
he should have come to stand for his claims? Or an apology? Whatever seems to be right, Ryan didn’t do either. Or is it just that the Jets have a big mouthed coach as one of the Giants players had said?
