  1. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement.  It started in Virginia in 1607.  It was sponsored by the Virginia Company of London.  Captain John Smith was a famous leader.  The Algonquian Indians were the settlers neighbors.

  2. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in what is now the US.

Three ships - the Susan Constant, the Discovery, and the Godspeed - arrived on what is now the shores of Virginia Beach in April 1607. They didn't stay there but in a few days moved inland (per His Majesty's orders) to avoid the Spanish fleet and have a better strategic and more protected location on the James River.

Captain John Smith was their leader. Their neighbors were Indians, of the Algonquin tribe. The tribal chief was Powhatan (pronounced POW - uh - tan) and his daughter you know: Pocahontas.
