An excited Sebastian Vettel after the first ever Friday Practice sessions in Korea
After the first ever Friday practice sessions for the Korean Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel admitted that it had been “good fun” to drive on the new Korean International Circuit due to the challenge of searching for grip on the slippery new surface of the
Yeongam track.
Although Vettel’s second session was compromised by a puncture, he said that he was still satisfied with how the day unfolded.
“I think we got a crash course in sliding around and drifting today - it was good fun. The track time was more valuable this afternoon, but I had a puncture early on in P2, which affected our running. As a result we had to go on to the option early and the
tyres weren't too grateful for that. But, all in all, it wasn't too bad,” said Vettel.
Despite his positive feedback about the circuit, Vettel had to admit that he had some causes of concern about a potential problem near the pit entry as it gets difficult to enter the pit lane.
“I think the pit entry is quite on the edge here because it's blind and someone going into the pits will be going slower than someone who's staying out. If you're trying to pass and they decide to pit, it could be quite difficult,” he said.
This might not seem like a big problem right now but during the race when the drivers are focusing on their pace completely, it will be a tricky turn. The Red Bulls were looking pretty good but after looking at the pace McLaren was developing as the session
progressed, Red Bull should come up with something superior in order to secure a good result at the Korean Grand Prix.
“I think qualifying should be good as the pace is there. Mark had a calm afternoon and looked competitive, the first sector is not in our hands, but we can fight back in the second and third sectors,” he added.
It will be a tough race for the Red Bull drivers and one has to admit, the Ferraris were also looking better than the Red Bulls in the long straight. Therefore, it would be interesting to watch what the Red Bulls have in store ahead of this weekend’s Korean
Grand Prix.
