An explanation for precognition?

I just want to hear a variety of explanations for precognition... offer up whatever you think is a valid explanation of it, be it an alternative or a scientific explanation, or just an interesting explanation for it that you know about. Thank you!

  1. Seeing something before it happens; it's a powerful gift. I have the gift and it has taken a big toll on my life in telling people what I see. Their is no scientific explantation for it because God is the one who gives it to you; if it's in your gift from above.

  2. TR is correct, there is no evidence to support the existance of precognition, and so to come up with a hypothesis to explain it wouldnt work.

For example, Newton gave us a theory of gravity, and then Einstein changed it. These theories only explained a known phenomena. Gravity didn't stop working without the theory.

Although we have no evidence that precognition exists, we do know about people who claim to be precognative.

They fit into two categories. 1) Con-men use a trick called cold reading to trick people into believing they are psychic. Most people are very convinced of the con-mans abilities if they are a good cold-reader. John Edwards and Sylvia Browne fit into this category. Neither will test thier powers under controlled unbiased conditions, which indicates they know they are fakes.

    2) Self-delusion. People use selective memory and situations of high probablity to test thier abilities.

Now here is where your abilities fall in. You are a cashier and you know what people come through your line on a regular basis. You do not have a time frame, so it could be days, it could be minutes, and they will be there. Therefore if someone comes through your line 3 days later you consider it a success, even though they would have come through as soon as they needed more groceries, which for most people is a couple of times a week.

Because the odds are so high for you to see the person, you dont need as much selective memory.

Try limiting the precognitions to 1 hour and see if that helps. If you still have the high rate of success if the person has to show up within an hour of thinking of them, then you might have something worth looking at.

What you are experiencing is more like rolling a dice, and saying its going to be something higher than 1 and I can predict it 5 times out of 6.

  3. GREAT QUESTION

precog is similar to deja vu except before and not after.

synchronicity would be more like it.coincidence maybe, but it does occur whether it is a fluke or a human trait.

  4. Seeing something before it happens.

  5. Generally you must establish something exists before you define it or hypothesize an explanation.

I think a better question might be to ask people to explain the psychology behind such a strong and widespread belief in something that from a scientific perspective doesn't even exist.

  6. i think it is gut instinct

  8. Precognition is defined as “the paranormal ability of the human mind to perceive thoughts, events or situations in advance of their happening––to know what is going to happen by purely psychic means.”Precognition is an unconscious process that involves the transfer of information. It is also associated with the flow of information about matters with which the information recipient is emotionally and intensely associated. The information may take the form of a dream, a flash of thought, a hunch, or a feeling

  9. It would be premature to start hypothesizing a scientific explanation for precognition, simply because there is no scientific evidence for precognition to begin with. Once a phenomenon has confirmatory evidence for its existence, then is the time to start developing an explanatory theory for it.  Precognition has no such evidence at this time.

  10. Look into remote viewing* which has been also described as; Psychic Spying. Some people seem to have a natural ability to astral travel or remote view.Maybe there is an afterlife where others have found a way to make contact with us with these psychic visions.

  11. How does precognition work?

I don't think anybody knows, and an individual's answer would have a lot to do with their beliefs. Clearly, you could go the spiritual route and consider it a gift from a Higher Power (God, your angels, etc.). You may believe you are very in-tune with your soul/your higher self, you chose this life, and you are giving yourself a "sneak peak" into the future.

You could go the psychological route, and believe you are unconsciously integrating many subliminal cues, are very sensitive on this level, and are instinctively able to put it all together (e.g., possibly how animals seem to have a 6th sense).

Clearly, experiencing would give a reasonable person something to really think about. Possibly even change their beliefs about the Universe.

  12. I just had a precognition.Reading your question and  before looking at them.I knew what the answers would be.Some would make sense.Others not so much.I also knew many of the answerer's names. That's probably how precognition works.
