An extinct speices that has somehow help humans?

In any possible way. And, the animal doesn't even have to be extinct, just nearly extinct.

  1. Whales are excellent example.  Most whale species were nearly driven to extinction for their oil.  Whale oil was used for lamps and lubrication.  A few whales are still being harvested, some by Japan and some for subsistence in the Arctic.  The issue of continued Japanese whaling is hotly contested.

    In New Zealand the Kiwi was hunted to extinction as a food source as were the Carrier pigeon in North America and the Dodo bird in Mauritius.


  2. Do you mean something like the use of mastodon ivory or the mastodon found frozen that was cooked for a banquet for paleontologists? Or the giant panda that serves as a logo for the WWF? Or the whales taken by the Japanese for food -- oops, my mistake; they call it research.
