An in-depth look at the Formula 1 team, Scuderia Ferrari – Part 2
One of the most legendary teams of Formula 1 Ferrari scored some pretty amazing performances throughout their career and they are still longing for more. The team scored 8 championships and in 1990, they had 2 of the most amazing drivers of the sport’s history,
Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell alongside each other.
The team was unable to score some promising results that year as they secured the 2nd place in the constructors’ standings after which, Mansell left the team and in came Jean Alesi. Alesi stayed with the team until 1995 but unfortunately
throughout his time with the team, he was unable to give the team a single constructors’ title.
He had drivers like Alain Prost and Gerhard Berger alongside him throughout his time but still the team was not able to perform at its best and in 1996, the team changed both of its drivers.
This driver line-up change proved to be quite promising for the team though as they signed Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine. Both of these drivers gave the team some promising results and stayed alongside each other for 4 years.
Despite the fact that they were not able to secure a single constructors’ championship, they did however score some very promising results and built a foundation for the team which is still intact.
After the 1999 Formula 1 season, Michael Schumacher was joined by Rubens Barrichello in the team which one has to admit was one of the most ultimate drivers’ line-up in the history of the sport.
Keeping in mind the team did give Schumacher more privileges than Barrichello, the team secured the constructors’ title in 2000 for the first time after 17 years. The team had a pretty dominant run despite the fact that McLaren were pretty strong that year.
Nevertheless, Ferrari were much faster than them comparatively this was the only competitive year for them during their longest championship reign in the sport which was in fact the longest championship reign by any team in Formula 1 history.
The following 4 years were extremely easy for Ferrari in terms of driving as Schumacher and Barrichello dominated the sport and the only competition they had was against each other.
Schumacher won the titles from 2000-2004 after which out of the blue, a team by the name of Renault which recently joined the sport a couple of years earlier rose out of nowhere and developed a championship winning car with the help of people like Flavio
Briatore and Fernando Alonso.
This was an extremely frustrating year for the team after which Alonso secured his first title in the sport. This was just the beginning for Renault though as they successfully defended the titles in 2006 as well and by this time, Ferrari were not performing
as well as they were from 2000-2004.
The following year, Schumacher announced his retirement and left the sport. With Felipe Massa in the team, they decided to sign Kimi Raikkonen who gave the team 2 constructors’ titles. The team performed very effectively from 2007-2008 as well before going
through another rough patch in 2009.
After a disappointing 2009 run, Raikkonen left the team and in came Fernando Alonso. The team was able to score some pretty good results in 2010 but since Massa was not able to cope up with Alonso’s pace, it was quite disappointing for the team as they ended
up in 3rd place in the constructors’ standings.
