An in-depth look at the history of Nurburgring circuit and its past five races – Formula 1
Nurburgring became a part of Formula 1 back in 1951 as the German Grand Prix. Back then, the Italian driver Alberto Ascari secured the victory for his team Ferrari after securing an amazing pole position.
Since then, the track has become quite popular amongst most of the Motorsports but the circuit recently has held races as a part of the European Grand Prix rather than the German Grand Prix.
After 25 years, the circuit is finally going to host a race as the German Grand Prix and this time, the race is going to be quite emotional and exciting for the current world champion Sebastian Vettel and the rest of the German drivers of the sport.
The past five races at the Nurburgring circuit were held as the European Grand Prix but in 2010, the European Grand Prix took place at Valencia as a result of which, Nurburgring was not a part of the Formula 1 calendar at all.
In 2009, Mark Webber secured the victory becoming the latest winner at the Nurburgring circuit when he drove for the Red Bull Racing team. This was a very crucial win for the team as they were struggling to cope up with Brawn GP back then and unfortunately,
lost both of the championships to them as well that year.
Before that, the European Grand Prix took place at Nurburgring in 2007 and back then, Fernando Alonso secured the victory during his lone season with McLaren and came even closer to his teammate Lewis Hamilton. Their rivalry during that time was extremely
fierce as both of the drivers claimed that they were the number one driver of McLaren as a result of which, a lot of misunderstandings developed.
A year before that, Michael Schumacher became the last German to win a race at the Nurburgring circuit and for the seven-time world champion, this was a much needed race win as Fernando Alonso was dominating the 2006 Formula 1 season with Renault and Ferrari
were struggling to cope up with them.
During the 2005 Formula 1 season on the other hand, Alonso secured his first race victory at the legendary circuit and later on that year, won his first championship in the sport as well to become the youngest Formula 1 champion in history at that time.
The 2004 Formula 1 season was a completely different story though as Michael Schumacher was dominating the championship ahead of the rest of the drivers and quite expectedly won the European Grand Prix which took place at the Nurburgring circuit to increase
his lead even further.
2003 was the year of Michael Schumacher’s brother Ralf Schumacher, as he secured the victory at the European Grand Prix even though Michael was dominating the season as a result of which, this race victory did not give Ralf any sort of edge over the rest
of the drivers in the championship.
Michael Schumacher secured both the 2003 and 2004 Formula 1 championships and the 2004 Formula 1 championship was his last championship to date. He has won seven championships up until now and is currently racing for Mercedes GP.
The 2011 German Grand Prix is going to be a memorable one and Sebastian Vettel must be hoping for a dominant weekend in front of his home crowd where he will be aiming for an increase in his championship lead over his top rivals Mark Webber and Fernando
Alonso.
