An in-depth look at the past and future of Red Bull Racing team – Formula 1
Red Bull Racing team became a part of Formula 1 back in 2005 and became an instant mid-running team of the sport as they were able to sign drivers like David Coulthard and Christian Klien for their first-ever Formula 1 season.
The team secured the 7th place in the constructors’ standings with 34 points back then and initially used Cosworth engines. After signing up with Ferrari as their engine suppliers for the 2006 Formula 1 season, the team did not improve much as
they again finished in 7th place in the constructors’ but this time with just 16 points.
The following year on the other hand was more like a breakthrough for the team as they signed Mark Webber alongside David Coulthard. It also signed with Renault as their engine suppliers. Renault are their engine suppliers to date and that they are also
playing a major role in the team’s current success.
Nevertheless, Coulthard and Webber managed to secure the 5th place in the constructors’ standings for the team with 24 points but still, this was not what the team was aiming for. In 2008, the team struggled to perform once again and as a result,
David Coulthard left the team after which the current Formula 1 world champion and championship leader Sebastian Vettel became a part of the team.
The 2009 Formula 1 season was a groundbreaking season for the team as they challenged for both of the titles until the very final race of the season and in the end, finished in 2nd place in the constructors’ standings ahead of teams like Ferrari
and McLaren.
This marked Red Bull’s competitiveness to a much higher level and in 2010, the team led the championship for a long time. In the end after pushing extremely hard alongside teams like McLaren and Ferrari, Sebastian Vettel secured the drivers’ title at the
very final race of the 2010 Formula 1 season. They also secured the constructors’ title by 476 points.
RBR’s dominance began starting from the 2010 Formula 1 season and now in the 2011 Formula 1 season up until the British Grand Prix, the team has secured 6 race wins in 9 races and they have a perfect pole position record as well.
Mark Webber has scored two pole positions for the team this season while Sebastian Vettel who is currently leading the championship has scored 7 pole positions. The team is leading the constructors’ championship by 328 points while Vettel is leading the
drivers’ championship by 204 points which is 80 points more than his closest rival, his teammate Mark Webber.
The team has been developing itself since the 2009 Formula 1 season and now it seems that they are currently at their peak.
However, one has to admit that RBR is not as established as McLaren and there are rumours that they might replace Webber with the 2008 Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton. If that happens, the team might win a couple of more championships but in the long run,
McLaren and Ferrari will beat them as they have better technology.
One cannot claim with confidence that they will deteriorate though as their Formula 1 journey seems quite promising but by the looks of it, McLaren and Ferrari are improving as well and it is just a matter of time that they might even beat them.
