An inexpensive lawn fertilizer?

I want to fertilize my lawn (late august/early september). It's a large lawn. Is there a good, inexpensive fertilizer, or DIY formula? Any insight would be great.

  1. Scott's fertilizer is much cheaper if purchased under the Walmart name, Experts.

  2. My neighbor, who has a lawn you could putt on, uses aged manure. He spreads it twice a year and rakes it in.

  3. I agree about house brands like Vigoro rather than Scotts.

If you find a good price on fertilizer this fall, just regular lawn food is fine, buy it!  Prices of fertilizers and many other garden related foods and mulches are going sky high next year due to the cost of raw materials and transportation.

Look for values this fall and buy them if you can store them safely and you can afford them.

  4. It might be a good idea to test your lawn soil pH. If it is low, then use horticultural lime to raise it. Grass needs soil between 6 and 7 pH and many garden soils are more acid. Lime is far cheaper than any fertilizer, and often works far better.

  5. Sure manure is great.................but watch out!

The smell will probably knock you over and your neighbor's.

I suggest that you go to your local home improvement store and get the "no name" brand.

It is much cheaper than Scott's, and the higher end fertilizers.

We tried top end quality and store brand, and found that the store brand worked just as well.

Many of the local commercial lawn services do use the "no name brand"

    Good luck!
