  1. Did you accidentally disable your wireless card? I would suggest that you check to be sure that it's enabled.

If your wireless card is enabled, I would suggest that you try to connect to your network and see if you're able to.

Perhaps your computer is trying to connect to a different network or something like that.

If that doesn't work, I would suggest that you try repairing your connection by going to the Control Panel and then Network and Internet Connections.

From there, you should right click on your connection and choose Repair.

Good luck and I hope I helped you!

  2. It sounds like the thunderstorm has done some damage to your computer.

Thunderstorms normally will fry the Ethernet Card, They normally $20.00 and up.

Wireless Cards are next and there prices have the same range.

Replacing these are the cheapest, and will more often than not fix the problem.

  3. If the new computer is picking up the router signal, and the older one is not, then the problem is not the router.  You will look for the problem in the older computer.

    Remember:

For file sharing you will need to have the same File System, like either FAT or NTFS

    on both computers the same

I'm thinking your laptop NIC card may have dropped the driver.  Or may have been affected from the storm.

The first thing to do is to check the NIC card for operability.

    1. To determine the NIC driver manufacturer

look in your Device Manager section.

    2. Go to START > RIGHT click MyComputer >

    select PROPERTIES >

    3. tab for HARDWARE > click button for Device Manager

    4. In Device Manager, scroll down to your Network Interface Card device, double click and get the name of the manufacturer.

    5. Go online to the manufacturer site > find DRIVERS

    6. Download the driver you need.

    7. Go to your desktop, find the driver, double click and INSTALL the driver.

    8. Restart your computer > it will "see" the new driver and may ask you if you want to use it

instead of the one you have...say YES.

    That should solve the problem.

    Now you just need to go to control panel > Networking > and run the wizard to set up your home network on the laptop;

and then you want to map the drives.
