An outstanding array of rewards awaits Lee Chong Wei in London Olympics – Badminton Update
Malaysian maestro Lee Chong Wei has setup dream final with Chinese nemesis Lin Dan in London Olympics and he will pocket lucrative incentive and rewards if he wins his country’s first gold medal on August 5, 2012.
World Number two shuttler, who was honoured with “Datukship” for his memorable performance in 2008 Beijing Olympics, is positive to end the long medal wait this year as he missed the golden opportunity in previous edition of the mega event.
The badminton-crazy nation is hoping the ace to raise the country’s flag at the Wembley Arena and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak called to encourage him and to pass all the wishes of people of Malaysia.
Datuk Najib shared his views on social networking site Twitter and said, “Just spoke to Chong Wei, congratulated him for a superb win! Told him to create history for Malaysia by winning the gold.”
Moreover, government has also announced lucrative amount of RM 1 million along with a mouth watering incentive scheme of National Sports Council's (NSC) for Olympic gold medal winners.
This is not all what Chong Wei will bag as he will also qualify for a lifetime monthly pension of RM 5000.
Meanwhile, a local furniture company has also vowed to award cash prize of RM 1 million if he escorts country to glory in the London Games.
The owner of KL Racquet Club Datuk Seri Andrew Kam, who also owns a gold mine, will offer a 12.5 kg gold bar worth RM 2 million.
However, Chong Wei will have to share this gold bar if any other Malaysian campaigner also wears a gold medal around his neck.
In the Beijing edition of the Olympics, he claimed second spot on the victory stand and became the first Malaysian to reap a medal after 1996. He was declared national hero by the government for his tremendous services in the field of sports.
Lee Chong Wei was also awarded RM 300, 000 cash and RM 3, 000 monthly lifetime pension along with two cars from title sponsors of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
This year, the NSC is not honouring only the gold medallist but silver and bronze winners will also pocket whopping amounts of RM 150, 000 and lifetime monthly pension of RM 1500.
