An overview of the game of Snooker in Pakistan – Snooker

The talent which Pakistan has always been producing when it comes to any sport is noteworthy. Snooker which is also known as the most stylish game has never been given proper attention in Pakistan by the government. There is no doubt about the talent
that Pakistan has for snooker but due to the lack of resources or mismanagement, the players have not been able to excel much in this field as of yet.
Coaching as we all know is an inevitable part for any game has never been looked upon properly in Pakistan for the snooker. Pakistan Billiard Snooker Association (PBSA) has put a demand for the hiring of a professional snooker coach for the Pakistan
Snooker Team but is still waiting for the necessary confirmation from the Sports Ministry and Pakistan Sports Board (PSB).
Secretary ‘Munnawar Hussain Sheik’ told APP that “We need funds for hiring a professional snooker coach, which are about 2000 US dollars per month as his salary.”
PBSA was highly concerned about the hiring of Mr. Sanjay Sawanth (Indian Snooker Coach) for the Pakistani snooker players when the Asian Snooker Championship was about to begin, said Mr. Munnawar.
Later on the officials of PBSA held a meeting in Thailand with the renowned Indian snooker coach Sanjay Sawanth to coach Pakistan snooker team and finalised him for a 3-month coaching programme which was to be held in 3 sessions of one month each.
Mr. Munnawar at that time  also said that he is very confident keeping in view the recent performance of M. Sajjad in the Asian Snooker Championship (runner-up) and the Korat-cup 2010 (winner), the PBSA was very confident that with proper coaching
Pakistan is going to bring the Gold medal from the games in Guangzhou.
He also discussed the excellent performance of Pakistani player in the 26th Asian Snooker Championship in Thailand, where Muhammad Sajjad created a new record of 4-century breaks including a highest break of 134, which was recorded for the
first time in the Asian Snooker Championship.
The rising star of Pakistan M. Sajjad played magnificently in the Asian Snooker Championship, where he outplayed all of his opponents in the qualifying matches of the league obtaining the number 1 position in his group, when finally he had to come
across a tough Thai player.
Sajjad tried his level best to fight for his country title but somehow succumbed to his opponent with a 3-7 frame score. On the contrary Asjad iqbal also played good and reached the last 16th stage of the Asian Snooker Championship,
but unfortunately lost in the pre-quarters.
The PBSA secretary added that the association had already submitted comprehensive proposal to the government and the PSB regarding the coaching of the snooker players for their participation in international competitions for the year 2010 – 2011.
This has been noticed as the first such instance in recent memory when Pakistan’s billiard association is looking to get a foreign coach on board for the team. If they manage to get one, then it can be said for sure that the players and the game both
are going to step a level up ahead.
