Ana Claudia Lemos Silva and Simone Alves da Silva prevail at the Trofeu Brasil de Atletismo
The Brazilian National Club Competition, held from August 3-7, is also regarded as the National Championships of the country. The event this year, which also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Trofeu Brasil de Atletismo, commenced on the traditional
track of Parque Ibirapuera present in Sao Paulo and observed the emergence of three new South American records and a number of stellar performances from young athletes.
The first one to leave spectators stunned was young Lemos Silva, who bagged the 100m and 200m title of the event and for clocking a 22.48 seconds finish in the latter discipline. His effort also marked a new South American record. The previous record over
the distance was claimed by Lucimar Moura, who had observed a finish of 22.60 seconds on the track.
Clocking an effort of 22.48 seconds was indeed a splendid effort which culminated in placing Lemos Silva as the 8th fastest runner in the world over the distance this year. Besides boasting of this tremendous success, the 22-year-old girl also
holds the 100m South American record for stopping the clock in 11.15 seconds. Amid the matchless strength she is capable of displaying on the track, she has been the double title winner at this year’s South American Championships held in Buenos Aires.
Cherishing the way she challenged and claimed the records set by her friend, Lucimar Moura, Lemos Silva said, “I have been able to beat two important records from Lucimar Moura, who has been the best Brazilian sprinter for many years. That means a lot to
me. I have a great friendship with her, who always gives me great advice, and is a very special person.”
The other undisputed performer of the event was 26-year-old long distance runner, Alves da Silva, who marked a new South American record over a distance of 10,000m. Taking the privilege, she stopped the clock in 31 minutes and 16.56 seconds. The previous
best was set by Carmen de Oliveira Furtado, who had marked 31 minutes and 47.76 seconds in a contest during the IAAF World Championships.
Alves, who is now all set to clam a title at the World Championships, while sharing about his training and ambitions for the sport said, “I have trained very hard in the last two months, hoping that the planning developed by my coach (former steeplechaser
Adauto Domingues) would bring me this wonderful record. I’m just hoping to do even better at the World Championships.”
Alves took over her present international status rather late, however, with her appearance at the World Championships in South Korea, fans have high hopes of her bagging the title.
