Ana Ivanovic defeated by Julia Goerges in Luxembourg
Ana Ivanovic’s stroke of good luck seems to be over, and the German eighth seed, Julia Goerges, seemed determined to take revenge on Friday, for her defeat at Linz.
In a 60-minute long quarter final match at the BNP Paribas Luxembourg event held on Friday, Goerges ousted her opponent and ended her recent streak with fourth seeded Ivanovic as one of the losers of the $220,000 event’s quarter finals. Ivanovic and Goerges
were the only two seeded players at the Luxembourg Open.
World Number 26, Ana Ivanovic seemed to have made a comeback from an unremarkable and mediocre year on the WTA Tour. Earlier this month, the Serbian professional tennis player won the title at the 2010 Generali Ladies Linz, in Austria.
She was seeded seventh at the event, and managed to defeat players such as Sorana Cirstea, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, Julia Georges and Roberta Vinci, before finally winning the final against Patty Schnyder in straight sets to seize the tournament cup.
In fact, the former World Number 1 did not drop a single set throughout the tournament, with her toughest match being the quarter final against Julia Goerges, with a score line of 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
Goerges scored an easy victory over Ivanovic in straight sets, winning the match 6-3, 6-1 on the hard court surface at the CK Sportcenter Kockelscheuer. Goerges fired eight aces at the indoor match, and also won 71 percents of her service points.
She also managed to save the only break point which Ivanovic set up for her. The Serbian player on the other hand accumulated six double faults within the hour-long match, and her hesitation and lack of focus proved to be her down fall right after her success
at Linz.
Before falling to the German WTA player at the quarter final, Ivanovic ran a reasonably successful run. She defeated Swede Johanna Larsson in the first round, 6-3, 6-0, before scoring another victory over Arantxa Parra Satonja of Spain, this time with a
score of 6-4, 6-1.
However, with this win over Ivanovic, Julia Goerges progressed to the last four of the event while leaving the Serb behind. Goerges has so far defeated Mandy Minella in the first round, scoring a straight sets victory over the local player. In the second
round, she rose against Spanish pro tennis player Carla Suarez Navarro with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
Other players, who overcame opponents in the tournament are British tennis pro Anne Keothavong, with her 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-4 victory over Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic.
Italian player Roberta Vinci also managed to top Belgian pro Kirsten Flipkens with a score line of 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, as well as six aces. Meanwhile, German player Angelique Kerber, who defeated Slovenian player Polona Hercog in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, dropping
only one break point on her way to the win.
It is against this player that Goerges will compete on Friday, setting the semi finals up as Goerges vs Kerber and Vinci against Keothavong. The victor will take home $37,000 dollars as prize money.
