Ana Ivanovic jolts down Caroline Wozniacki to reach the quarters – BNP Paribas Open 2012
In a match between two former world number one stars, Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic surprised everyone after upsetting fourth seeded Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 on Tuesday. She nudged up a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the Danish number
one to advance into the final eight at this Premier Mandatory event taking place in California, United States.
In a late night match, the gorgeous Serbian flashed her old self to occupy the final spot in round of eight at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) event. After stunning the world number four in 70 minutes, Ivanovic not only avenged her loss at the Dubai
Duty Free Tennis Championships two weeks ago but also took lead in the head-to-head series by 3-2 against the Dane.
Ivanovic nervously entered the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and suffered the first blow in the opening game. Despite recovering in the very next game, she lost her again in the third game and trailed at 1-2. However, the Serb re-focused quickly and went on
a four-game rampage to leap at 5-2. She then swiped in her serve once more and pulled out the opener with a 6-3 win.
Ranked 16th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Ivanovic kept her rhythm in the following set and earned the critical break in the third game, subsequently going 3-1 up. She then maintained consistency in her game and kept remaining serves without facing
any real challenge. The Serb cashed in another break chance in the seventh game and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
Overall, Wozniacki displayed dismal performance throughout this epic encounter. She enjoyed her career best circuit last year which saw her lifting six titles and staying at the number one rank for almost the whole year. However, the Dane failed to defend
her titles this season and exited with disappointment from this tournament.
The blooming Serb will next confront the seventh seeded, Marion Bartoli, who drilled through Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova with a breadstick to occupy this spot. The French number one broke her rival’s serve three times to steal the show.
