Ana Ivanovic ousts Shuai Zhang in the first round – Rogers Cup 2011
World number 16, Ana Ivanovic and Shuai Zhang took to the hard courts of the Rexall Centre in York University, Toronto, Canada on Tuesday for their first round match at the 2011 Rogers Cup. The Serb, Ivanovic bagged a double bread
stick (6-1, 6-1) victory against her Chinese (Zhang) adversary.
After winning the pitch, Ivanovic opened the set by smashing two aces and with a pin point precision struck zero double faults, while, her opponent hit two foot faults and endorsed the Serb with two points.
Although, Ivanovic had managed to hit only 40% of her first serve targets, she bagged a magnificent 88% of her first serve, along with a 50% in her second serve and therefore attained an exceptional 65% of her total service points.
In addition, a strong back hand swing enabled the 23-year old Serb to return 63% of her adversary’s shots during the set. Mean while, the Chinese was in a state of torpor and mustered 7 out of 20 return points, putting together
a pathetic 35% win in the total return points.
The final straw in crushing her opponent was when Ivanovic broke her opponent thrice and won the set with 64% of the total set points, which were almost twice as many as the Chinese.
Yesterday might have been a day for upsets but Ivanovic was not to let that happen, and she restricted her opponent to yet another one point in the second set. Even though, both the players had struck two 2 double faults and lost
2 points each, Ivanovic had smashed four aces and gained an upper hand.
With strong defending techniques the Serbian saved all her break points and broke her opponent twice, along with, attaining 10 out of 16 return points, making it a commendable 63% win against Zhang, who was barely able to get 30%
of her total returns.
Not only was her return commendable but her serve was an exceptional display of power shots aimed at her opponent and hence, clenched a grand 70% of her total service points, in comparison to her opponent who could only manage
a pitiable 38% in her total service points.
Zhang was no match for her Serbian opponent and she was unable to save the two break points on her serve and was also unable to win any break points. Hence, she lost the set with a total of 33% win in her total set points, whereas,
the top seeded Ana Ivanovic, accomplished 67% of her total set points.
Standing at 6 feet and 1 inch, Ivanovic will face the Czech Iveta Benesova in the second round of the main event.
