Ana Ivanovic rallies past Julia Goerges to the last 16 – Wimbledon Championships 2012
World number 14, Ana Ivanovic, stumbled apart in the opening set but bounced back emphatically to win a match against the 24th ranked German, Julia Goerges, in the third round of the Wimbledon Championships on Saturday.
Goerges won the first 6-3 but lost the following two 3-6, 4-6 respectively to end up on a disappointing note after a promising start.
A swap of breakthroughs was witnessed at the beginning of the clash. However, both players hung on to their serves in the following two games to push the scores at 2-2. The 14th seed Serb was powered down in the following
game that gave a lead of 4-2 to her rival.
The 22nd seed German kept the lead intact until the end and hinted an upset in the round of 32. The opening set finished in 32 minutes witnessing an enthralling show from two hard hitters. Both players managed an ace
apiece with Goerges smashing nine winners compared to six of her rival. However, she committed six unforced errors as well that was a worrying stat for her. The German won 33 points in total and inched ahead with a difference of just six points in the end.
Both players started off the second set with a couple of serve holds but not before saving six breakpoints altogether. However, it was not long before Ivanovic broke serve in the sixth game and took a lead of 4-2 in the second
set.
Serb former world number one was on the verge of losing a breakpoint in the final game of the second set but did well to hang on and tied the set scores at one apiece. It was a terrific match-up and crowd loved every bit of it.
It took 40 minutes for Ivanovic to level the set scores. She smashed two aces and struck 9 blistering winners. Goerges was just not able to convert the breakpoints in her favour. Apart from that, she smashed 15 winners and won
33 points in total; fell short of seven points in the end.
No breakthroughs in the first four games of the final set pushed the scores at 2-2. However, the 23-year-old German fell apart in the following game; gifting a crucial lead to her rival. She tried to extremely hard to win the break
back in the following game but failed to do so; lost the final set after battling for 43 minutes.
Ana Ivanovic will take on the second seed Belarusian, Victoria Azarenka, in the clash for a place in the last eight.
