Ana Ivanovic splits apart Shahar Peer to reach the third round – French Open 2012
Serb beauty queen, Ana Ivanovic, finally broke the shackles got off the mark against the 55th ranked Israeli, Shahar Peer, in the second round of the Roland Garros French Open on Wednesday. She squashed her in straight
sets 6-2, 6-2 and booked a spot in the last 32 players.
Previous three encounters were won by the 25-year-old Israeli star but the last one was played in August 2010 during the Southern California Open. So, a lot had changed in two years and Ivanovic is back in form bidding for the
Top-10 place by the end of the year’s second Grand Slam in Paris.
The 13th seed Serb lost the opening serve game but levelled the scores in the following game with a quick breakthrough. The momentum suddenly swirled in her favour and she bagged another breakpoint that made it two in
a row.
A comfortable serve hold was followed with a breakpoint to love that gave her an unassailable lead of 5-1. She lost the following game but didn’t wait long before breaking back in the eighth game to round off the first set proceedings
in her favour.
Nothing changed in the second set as well except from the first serve hold from Peer. She dropped the serve game early in the set and went down to a trail of 1-4 in the meantime. Ivanovic continued to exert pressure on her rival
and bagged the final breakthrough of the match to love in the eighth game that proved to be the last action of the clash.
A resounding win for the Serb puts her in the list of favourites to win the title. However, she is up against a tough competition especially from the Top-2 players, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova, who look to be in devastating
form at the moment.
Next up for the Serb lady is the 21st seed Italian, Sara Errani, who has been the most improved player of the year. So, it will not be a straight forward match for the former world number one but she is expected to make
through to the round of 16.
