Ana Ivanovic topples Petra Kvitova in third rubber – Fed Cup WG 2012
Serbian top ranked star, Ana Ivanovic, stunned Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova in straight sets in the final showdown at the Fed Cup World Group 2012 on Sunday. However, Lucie Safarova devastated Jelena Jankovic with double breadsticks to lead her nation
to glory at this prestigious event.
The former world number one, Ivanovic showed exceptional skills to outclass the world number eight in straight sets. After recording the victory, Ivanovic put hopes for her nation to click the Fed Cup taking place in Prague, Czech Republic.
The gorgeous Serb dropped her serve once but broke her rival’s serve four times, eventually carving out the victory with a 6-3, 7-5 score line in one hour and 47 minutes.
“To give a whole point to our team was just amazing,” the delighted Serb states in a courtside interview after the match. “It was a really good quality match. I knew I was going to play better today because I got that experience yesterday.”
Kvitova, who was making a comeback form illness, reflected on her performance: “I didn’t have a lot of energy and it was obvious on the court. I tried to play only for a few shots, I couldn’t play for longer, and that’s why I started to have mistakes.”
The 25-year-old made a convincing entry at the O2 Arena. She drew the first blood in the fifth game and jumped to a 4-2 lead. The Serb kept her composure and not only slid her remaining serves with poise but capitalised on another break opportunity in the
last game, eventually sealing the opener by winning six games to three.  
Currently ranked 12th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Ivanovic kept momentum rolling in the following set. She got the desiderated break in the fourth game and jumped to a 4-1 lead. Apart from losing her edge in the ninth
game, the Serb remained focused and clicked the set with a 7-5 win after cashing another break chance in the last game.
Ivanovic lost the opening rubber against Lucie Safarova. However, she brought Serbia back in contention with this spectacular display of tennis.
Ivanovic’s compatriot and fellow former world number one, Jankovic, was edged out by Safarova in the fourth rubber, eventually rewarding Czech Republic a 3-1 victory.
