Ana Ivanovic vs. Serena Williams: quarter-finals Preview – US Open 2012
Ranked fourth in the WTA Premier rankings, Serena Williams is pitted against the Serbian former world number one, Ana Ivanovic, in the quarter-finals of the US Open 2012 at the Flushing Meadows Park. The highly-awaited contest
between the two top class performers is scheduled to take place on Wednesday afternoon.
The American tennis veteran will battle against Ivanovic for the fourth time and has confident 3-0 lead in the head-to-head series. The duo initially encountered each other at the US Open Champions, in the year 2006. The
wildcard contestant at that time, Williams, prevailed over her rival in the third round and marked her remarkable win at 6-2, 6-4. The next combat between the two took place at the Dubai Tennis Championship 2009, with Williams overwhelming the Serbian in
the quarter-finals at a 6-4, 6-4 score line. History repeated itself again at the 2011 US Open, when the American professional gave a straight sets upset, 6-3, 6-4 to 16th seed, Ivanovic in the fourth round.
The 30-year-old Williams, has drastically improved her current years rankings and is desperate to bag away all the titles to mark an emphatic beginning to her ending career. Earlier this year, she received a surprising upset
at the hands of the Russian, Ekaterina Makarova in the fourth round. At the French Open, she could not rally past beyond the first round and received a shocking defeat at the hands of Virginie Razzano. However, Williams made the most alarming entry at the
Wimbledon Champions held at the All-England-Courts and smashed the world number two, Agnieszka Radwanska, after a tough battle in the final. At the London Olympics, the fourth seeded Williams’ strength was inevitable and she smoothly disposed the Russian tennis
ace, Maria Sharapova, 6-0, 6-1 in the final match to complete her Career Golden Grand Slam.
The 24-year-old Serbian is amongst the hot favourite contenders for the title this year. She voyaged until the fourth round of the Australian Open earlier this year. She is the former French Open Champion but received an
outrageous upset at the hands of Sara Errani in the third round in this year’s edition of Roland Garros. At the All-England-Courts, Ivanovic could not progress beyond the fourth and third round, at the Wimbledon and Olympics respectively.
The right-handed American tennis professional has exhibited her remarkable game plan throughout the running tournament. She effortlessly made her way to the quarter-finals after dispatching all the other competitors in straight
sets. On the contrary, world number 13th ousted all odds with her firm resolve and fearlessness to book a battle against the American powerhouse.
Williams’ win over the Serbian is a sure short stamp in the eyes of many tennis fans. She is 14-times Grand Slam winner and can surely go to any extent to win this Major tournament.
