Ana Savic stomps over Basak Eraydin in opening round – Ankara Cup 2012
Croatian qualifier, Ana Savic, eased past the local wild card recipient, Basak Eraydin, in straight sets at the Ankara Cup 2012 on Tuesday. She nudged up a 6-2, 6-3 success against the 18-year-old to power into the second round at this indoor hard court
tournament taking place from 17th to 23rd December in Ankara, Turkey.
The underdog unleashed brilliant skills to overpower Eraydin in their first meeting. After bagging the match in almost one hour and 15 minutes, Savic high-spiritedly entered the second round and comfortably inched closer towards the prize money.
Savic made a powerful entry at the Ankara Tennis Club. She drew the first blood in the second game and jumped to a 3-0 lead. Apart from losing her concentration afterwards and gifting away following two games, the Croat remained focused and pocketed the
last three games. She failed to block the only breakpoint she faced but cashed two out of five break opportunities to move a step closer towards her goal.
Ranked 285th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Savic carried her rhythm in the proceeding set. After Eraydin held her serve in the fifth game, the Croat went on a four-game tear and clinched the set with a 6-3 score line.
She blocked the only breakpoint she came across and converted two out of five break opportunities to her advantage.
Savic has recently conquered the title at the Solin ITF event. She triumphed over Bernarda Pera in a three-set nail-biter in the final showdown. In addition to this, the Croat lost only a single set en route to the title-round.
Up next for the qualifier is the eighth seed, Cagla Buyukakcay. The local seed displayed tremendous skills to outshine her compatriot, Pemra Ozgen, in straight sets to advance.  Buyukakcay lost her serve once but broke her rival’s serve four times, eventually
recording a 6-3, 6-2 success.
The second seed, Monica Puig, also stole the show on Monday. She bounced back to overpower Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Mervana Jugic-Salkic in a three-set thriller to advance. The Puerto Rican found her rhythm in the second set tie-breaker before sealing the
deal with a 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-1 victory.
