Ana Savic stuns Cagla Buyukakcay to enter quarters – Ankara Cup 2012
Croatian qualifier, Ana Savic, surprised everyone after upsetting the eighth seed, Cagla Buyukakcay, in a straight-set battle at the Ankara Cup 2012 on Wednesday. She penned down a 6-4, 7-5 success against the local starlet to charge into the quarter-finals
at this ITF (International Tennis Federation) Women’s Circuit event taking place in Ankara, Turkey.
The underdog showed brilliant skills and abilities to outclass Buyukakcay in their first encounter. After stealing the spotlight in almost one hour and 45 minutes, Savic comfortably booked a spot in the final eight at this indoor hard court tournament taking
place from 17th to 23rd December.
Savic assertively entered the Ankara Tennis Club. She got the desiderated break in the opening game and took the initial lead. She lost her edge towards the end but quickly broke her rival’s serve once again, eventually sealing the opener by winning six
games to four. The Croat warded off three out of four breakpoints she faced but cashed two out of four break opportunities to earn the fame.
Ranked 285th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Savic maintained her intensity in the following set. She swayed from her path and after losing her serve twice, the Croat went 1-5 down. However, she quickly counterattacked
after that and went on a six-game killing spree. The Croat failed to defend both breakpoints she encountered but cashed three out of six break chances to formulate a 7-5 victory.
The 23-year-old Croat committed more double faults but clobbered a better first serve share and hammered more winners.
Up next for Savic is the Montenegro lucky loser, Danka Kovinic, who triumphed over the local wild card entrant, Ipek Soylu, in straight sets to progress. She warded off early resilience to formulate a 7-6(2), 6-2 score line against the Turk.
The seventh seed, Aleksandra Krunic from Serbia, will accompany Savic in the proceeding round. She crippled the Romanian challenger, Alexandra Dulgheru, with a breadstick to advance. The seeded Serb jolted down a 7-5, 6-1 victory to secure a place in the
quarter-finals. She dropped her serve twice but broke her opponent’s serve five times.
