Anabel Garrigues, Johanna Larsson and Lourdes Dominguez Lino win at Abierto Mexicano Telcel event
Anabel Medina Garrigues, Johanna Larsson and Lourdes Dominguez Lino won their matches at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel Tennis Tournament in Mexico on Tuesday.
The Spanish, Anabel Medina Garrigues took on the Czech tennis player, Kristyna Pliskova in her opening match of the tournament. Garrigues, who was once placed 16th on the WTA rankings table, had a terrible 2010 season as her ranking slipped down
to 92.
However, she looked in great touch in her first match of the competition as she outclassed her opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. In their previous meeting at the Prague Open 2010, Garrigues had defeated Pliskova in straight sets and continued her winning
streak against the Czech on Tuesday.
Pliskova had her chances in the match but was unable to convert long rallies in her favour, hitting her forehands outside the lines on several occasions. Garrigues broke serves at regular intervals and completed her win in just 70 minutes.
In another contest, Johanna Larsson also registered a victory against the Austrian Yvonne Meusburger after three tight sets.
Larsson looked in complete control at the beginning of the match. The Swiss broke the serve twice in the first set to win it comfortably 6-1. Meusburger came back strongly in the second set and then clinched a crucial break to level the set score 1-1. In
the decider, Larsson’s superior game took the match completely away from her opponent. She won six out six games to seal the match 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.
The in-form Larsson, who had a terrific 2010, will now be looking to put another great performance at the tournament.
Meanwhile Spanish veteran Lourdes Dominguez Lino upset the second seeded young Slovenian Polona Hercog in a three setter 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to make it to the next round.
Lino opened the match on a very competitive note. The world number 51 made great use of her vast experience at the international level. The 30-year-old Lino was agile, used the court very well to her advantage, and sealed the match after a hard-fought battle.
