Anabel Garrigues crushes Lesia Tsurenko in the second round – POLI-FARBE Budapest Grand Prix 2011
Number five seed Anabel Medina Garrigues crushed Ukrainian tennis-pro Lesia Tsurenko 6-2, 7-5 on Wednesday to advance into the quarterfinal of 2011 Poli-Farbe Budapest Grand Prix in Hungary. The Spaniard made a strong start to
the match as she clinched the opener in less than 35 minutes. A good fight back from Tsurenko was observed in the second set but Garrigues was able to wrap up the match in straight sets as she did not lose her concentration.
Garrigues served with deadly accuracy as she took control of the points right from the start. Breaking the serve twice in the opening set, she raced to an impassable 5-1 lead. The Spanish tennis-pro timed her gorgeous forehand
and backhand shot to perfection and made her opponent run for her money. Slicing the ball brilliantly, she forced errors from Kuchova. Serving for the set, she secured four consecutive points to put herself in the driving seat.
Tsurenko, who looked down and out at the end of the of the opener, put up a good fight in the second set as she broke Garrigues twice to add some spice to the situation. The Spanish veteran was also up for the challenge as she
broke back regularly to stay in the set. Breaking the serve in eleventh game, she took a tricky 6-5 lead in the set. Holding on to her next service game comfortably, Garrigues sealed the battle to book her place in the next round of Women’s Tennis Association
tournament.
Converting 47 per cent of the points on her first serve, Garrigues played a very controlled game as she did not allow her opponent an entry back into the match. Converting five out ten break points in the match, she made most of
the available opportunities. Tsurenko fell short in several areas of the game and hence paid the price. She made a poor start to the match and couldn’t recover from the blows inflicted on her by Garrigues.
Garrigues is having a decent time on the WTA tour this season. She has given impressive performances in the year 2011 including her title win at Estoril and a semi-final appearance at the Mexican Open.
Winner of ten WTA titles, Garrigues will be hoping for her eleventh triumph here on the clay courts of Hungary. If the Spanish can continue her great form in her upcoming matches at the tournament, she could be a real contender
to win Budapest Grand Prix title. Her opponent in the quarterfinal will be the winner from the match between Sara Errani and Stefanie Voegele.
