Anabel Medina Garrigues, Greta Arn enter the second round of qualifier – AEGON International 2011
Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain was largely untroubled as she reached the second round of the qualifying draw at 2011 AEGON International 2011, beating Naomi Broady of Great Britain with a 6-4, 6-2 score.
Broady, who is ranked 231 in the WTA (Women Tennis Association) singles rankings list, was spirited throughout the match and broke Garrigues twice in the contest, but failed to grasp a cutting edge losing 4-6, 2-6. In their first
meeting at the tournament, Garrigues now leads the year-to-date head-to-head 1-0 against the Brit.
A brilliant opening to the match, Garrigues broke Broady in the opening game to enjoy a 3-0 lead. Garrigues was the more aggressive player whilst returning, and forced her tenacious opponent into committing a number of unforced
errors. Things started to heat up in the fourth game when Broady fought back to tie the score at 4-4.
Broady battled bravely in the first set despite struggling to put her higher ranked opponent away during the long rallies. With the Brit running out of ideas, Garrigues pulled out a dipping backhand slice, which Broady judged badly,
handing her rival the first set.
Opening the serve in the second set, Garrigues began to step up the level of her game. Broady showed her lack of experience with four double-faults and then blazed an easy passing shot out to give the Spaniard the second set 6-2.
With this win, Garrigues has improved her year-to-date win/loss mark to 23/13 and now moves on ahead to face Christina McHale in the second round of the qualifying draw.
Among all the winners on Sunday, the qualifying second seed Greta Arn also caused an upset to world number 73, Anastasia Rodionova of Australia with a 6-1, 6-4 score line.
An extraordinary presentation of tennis from the Hungarian as to have shocked her opponent, as Rodionova failed to win more than five games in the match.
Arn was comfortable throughout; despite Rodionova breaking back after the Hungarian had broken to take the score to 3-1. Thereafter, Arn broke twice thanks to some gusty play and Rodioniva’s growing unforced error count.
The second set followed the same pattern as the Australian was forced to serve to stay in the match. And with Arn piling on the pressure, she broke once more to take the second set with a 6-4 score.
Hitting three aces to Rodionova’s one, Arn capitalised on the Arn’s six double-faults as she raced towards her victory. Hitting a meagre 67% on her first serve, the Hungarian recorded an equal 67% win on it, winning a total of
75 points to Rodionova’s 57.
Arn now moves on ahead to play Tamira Paszek of Austria in the second round of qualifier.
