Anabel Medina Garrigues blows away Iveta Benesova from the Andalucia Tennis Experience
World number 62 Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain wiped out her opening round competitor, Iveta Benesova of Czech Republic, at the Andalucia Tennis Experience in Marbella, Spain on Wednesday noon. Garrigues took just 79 minutes
of play to outstrip the Czech in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, to advance to the second round of the WTA (women’s Tennis Association) tournament.
The belligerent Spaniard avenged her Australian Open defeat from Benesova and extended her head-to-head lead to 4-2 by registering her ninth victory of the running year.
An outstanding show of dominance and sheer class was exhibited by the Spaniard. Garrigues appeared unplayable by her bleak opponent, who botched to cope with the furry of the Spanish. Benesova failed to hold serve in any of her
games in the opener and crumbled under intense pressure exerted by her superior opponent.
Garrigues had a ballistic start to the contest, breaking serve in the very first game of the opening set to lead 2-0. A couple of costly unforced errors by Benesova in the fourth game bestowed a second break point to her opponent
and left her in the most awkward position in the set, trailing 0-4. The Spaniard kept playing quality error-free tennis to consolidate her lead in the contest and stung a third consecutive serve break to reach 5-0, serving for the match. A forehand winner
from Garrigues’ racquet marked an end to the first set at a forceful note of 6-0.
The Spaniard took off the second set in the similar manner as the first one, breaking in the very first game and holding serve to lead 2-0. Although Benesova uplifted her first serve percentage to 61, she still couldn’t withstand
the power game of the Spaniard. Garrigues broke to a lead of 3-0 before Benesova finally registered her first serve break in the fourth game to cut the deficit 1-3.
Things kept worsening for the Czech as Garrigues inflicted an all important break point to reach 5-2, serving for the match. A fiery ace brought the first match point for the Spaniard, who rightfully converted it to seal victory
at 6-2.
Garrigues will next face the fourth seed Romanian, Alexandra Dulgheru, who won her first round match against Anastasia Pironkova, 7-6(3), 7-6(5), 7-5.
