Anabel Medina Garrigues bulldozes Laura Robson to clear round one – Roland Garros French Open 2012
Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain eased into the second round of the Roland Garros French Open at the expense of the 18-year-old Briton lucky loser, Laura Robson, who couldn’t survive the onslaught of her opponent. A straight-sets
triumph, 6-2, 6-1, for the 31st ranked Spaniard will help her boost morale and stay focused on the task.
Robson also lost to the Spaniard in the second round of the US Open last year. It was the perfect opportunity for the 126th ranked Briton to take her revenge but her efforts were just not good enough to beat the likes
of the Garrigues. She only won three games in the whole match and tamed across the court at the will of her rival.
Garrigues broke serve in the second game of the match and took a lead upfront. She was forced to save three breakpoints in the fifth game to hang on to that lead but she did well and didn’t lose focus.
Robson stayed in the hunt for a break back but in the process lost her concentration on the serves and gifted another breakpoint to her rival in the eighth game that rounded off the first set proceedings in the favour of the Spaniard.
It was a half hearted performance from the left-handed Briton who is famous for her strength and courage to dig deep into the match and keep the set alive.
The second set was even worse for the Briton who lost five games in a row including two breakthroughs. She was down with two breakpoints and had to win the following five games to keep the set alive which was technically an impossible
task for the teenager who was already down and out in the match. Garrigues allowed just one serve hold to the Briton before capturing another serve hold to clear the first round.
It was a one-side encounter featuring no competition at all. A complete demolition from the Spanish number one booked her a draw with the French qualifier, Irena Pavlovic. It is considered to be another easy route for the Spaniard
who should reach the third round with no problem at all.
