Anabel Medina Garrigues crushes Sania Mirza in round two – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Spanish number one, Anabel Medina Garrigues, edged past the Indian icon, Sania Mirza, in straight sets at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 on Friday. She clobbered a 6-2, 7-5 victory over the Indian star to reach the third round at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
The 24th seeded Spaniard showed her true colours to dump the wild card entrant. She required an hour and 25 minutes to overpower Mirza and advance at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event.
Garrigues high spiritedly entered the Californian hard courts and after warding off both breakpoints she came across, the Spaniard kept her entire serves. She capitalised on both break opportunities to seal the opener with an exceptional 6-2 score line.
The Spaniard carried her momentum into the following set and bagged it by winning seven games to five. Garrigues failed to brush off all three breakpoints she faced but made a quick counter-attack and recovered. She then broke the Indian’s serve for the
fourth time in the end and stole the spotlight.
Summing up Garrigues’ performance at this event, the seed manifested a better first serve share of 63 per cent in contrast with Mirza’s 59 per cent and capped the match by clicking 68 points.
The Spanish ace will next confront the 14th seed, Julia Goerges, who stomped over the British star, Elena Baltacha, in straight sets to set-up this duel.
Goerges smacked seven vicious aces to smoothly keep her entire serves. She converted three out of four break chances to her advantage and consequently clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 score line. Goerges clobbered a poor first serve share but incredibly
availed 22 out of 26 points on it.
The former world number two, Vera Zvonareva, also earned the glory later that day. She jolted down a 6-3, 6-4 success against the Japanese veteran, Kimiko Date-Krumm, in their first meeting. The Russian lost her serve twice but broke the 41-year-old’s serve
four times to dominate in this 74-minute battle.
Next up for the Russian is Czech Republic’s Klara Zakopalova who stunned the 19th seed, Daniela Hantuchova, to secure this position.
