Anabel Medina Garrigues plonks Sesil Karatantcheva in round one – KDB Korea Open 2012
Spanish star, Anabel Medina Garrigues, tumbled the Kazakhstani qualifier, Sesil Karatantcheva, in straight sets at the KDB Korea Open Tennis Championship 2012 on Tuesday. She nudged up a 6-4, 6-4 success over the world number 90 to advance into the second
round at this outdoor hard court event taking place in Seoul, South Korea.
Medina Garrigues stayed on track to grab her 12th career title after triumphing over the Kazakh in their second outing at the Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Center. The contestants last met each other at the Grand Prix De SAR in Fes four years ago
and after recording this victory, the Spaniard improved to a 2-0 lifetime in the head-to-head series against Karatantcheva.
The 30-year-old assertively entered this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event. She smoothly bagged her serves until she drew the first blood in the seventh game and put her nose ahead for the first time in this set. Apart from losing her
edge in the very next game, the Spaniard broke her opponent’s serve again and eventually sealed the opener by winning six games to four.
Ranked 38th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Medina Garrigues maintained her intensity in the following set. After breaking the Kazakh’s serve twice, she got the upper hand. Despite levelling her scores in the eighth game, the Spaniard got the breakthrough
in the proceeding game and ultimately clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
On the whole, the Spanish number one clobbered a slightly higher first serve share of 65 per cent in contrast with her opponent’s 63 per cent and amazingly marked 21 out of 36 points on it.
Next up for Medina Garrigues is the sixth seed, Varvara Lepchenko, in the pre-quarters. The American seed trashed Italy’s Camila Giorgi in straight sets to progress at this event.
The top seeded Dane, Caroline Wozniacki, crippled Netherlands’ Arantxa Rus with a breadstick to steal the show later that day. She notched up a 6-1, 6-2 score line in 62 minutes and improved to a 2-0 lifetime in the head-to-head series against the Dutch.
Wozniacki cashed in all four break chances and spilled fewer double faults to rule the match.
