Anabel Medina Garrigues slays Tsvetana Pironkova to reach round two – Mutua Madrid Open 2012
Spanish number one, Anabel Medina Garrigues, devastated the Bulgarian star, Tsvetana Pironkova, with a bagel at the Mutua Madrid Open 2012 on Sunday. She penned down a 6-0, 6-2 victory against the world number 43 to power into the second round at this WTA
(Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event taking place in Madrid, Spain.
Medina Garrigues showed top class performance to trash the Bulgarian number one in straight sets in their fifth meeting. After pocketing this match, the Spaniard not only improved to a 5-0 record in the head-to-head series against Pironkova but also booked
a place in the second round.
The Spanish veteran stormed into the Park Manzanares and wiped out the opening six games in a row. She brushed off both breakpoints she faced and capitalised on three out of four break opportunities to inch towards the fame.
Ranked 30th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Medina Garrigues maintained her intensity in the second set and stroke out the opening four games in a row before the Bulgarian could come on the score sheet. She then swiped in remaining serves and clinched
the set with a 6-2 score line.
The Spaniard will next face the Romanian ace, Sorana Cirstea, who stunned seventh seeded, Marion Bartoli, in three sets to set-up this duel.
The former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, also stole the show later that day.
"I went down and rolled my ankle in the first set," Wozniacki was quoted in a court-side interview after the match. "I could feel the pain. I felt restricted out there, but I just fought as hard as I could, which is all I could do today. I don't really know
how I was able to win the match. I'm not playing tomorrow, so a day of rest will be nice, then we'll see."
The Danish number one battled past the Kazakhstani challenger, Ksenia Pervak, in three sets to occupy this spot. Wozniacki brushed off 14 out of 22 breakpoints she faced and cashed in eight out of 19 break opportunities to manipulate a 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-4 score
line in almost three hours.
