Anabel Medina Garrigues trounces Camila Giorgi in the first round – HP Japan Open 2012
Seeded sixth, Anabel Medina Garrigues, qualified for the second round after defeating Italian right-hander, Camila Giorgi, for the second round of HP Japan Open 2012 held at the hard courts of the Osaka. The Spanish veteran received
a shocker in the initial set by 3-6 but later she jolted down her 6-2, 6-2 triumph after one hour and 50 minutes on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old Italian junior commenced a remarkable start in the opening set and broke her challenger’s initial serve, stamping a 2-love lead in the second game. The score line crossed down to 2-2 in the fourth game but Garrigues
was unable to hit back. Giorgi kept her posture and dusted away her challenger’s serves. Despite of the lesser experience, she proved her critics wrong and nudged forward to stamp the initial set with a 6-3 score.
Currently ranked 40th in the WTA Rankings, Garrigues, shockingly manifested her superior experience and struggled hard to avenge her former loss. The set displayed comparatively more serve breaks than usual. However,
the Spanish did not lose hope and she stung the Italian in the sixth game, which unveiled her class and superior game plan. She beautifully served high paced forehands, terminating the second set with a 6-2 lead.
A similar pattern followed in the decider but the right-hander Spanish contender unleashed her exact potential to quickly jump forward and recorded her victory. Like before, the score line equalized to 2-all. She completely shattered
Giorgi’s confidence and bagged away her opponent’s serves in the sixth and eighth game. Eventually, the higher ranked Spaniard stole the show by stamping her 6-2 win.
World number 79, Giorgi, had an average initial serve of 59 percent but could only convert nine of 19 first and five of 10 second delivery points. Nonetheless, she could only capitalize on one of the three break points presented
and Garrigues secured just three of five. The Spanish participant had a comparative lower first serve with just eight of 13 first and five of second delivery points.
For the second round of the tournament, Garrigues will battle against the British, Heather Watson.
