Anadolu Efes cruise to a 66-62 win over Belgacom Spirou - Euroleague Recap
Wednesday night marked the second consecutive win Anadolu Efes in the last two weeks.
Last week, they had overpowered Partizan MT: S and just few hours ago, they pulled off another important win against Belgacom Spirou (66-62) to improve their record to 4-3 and hence augment their chances of reaching the top 16.
Spirou on the other hand have dropped to 1-6 after this loss and probably won’t be able to make it to the second round now.
Efes started brilliantly and never trailed throughout the game and despite of a cosmetic surge by Spirou down the stretch, the result of the game was never in doubt.
Dusko Savanovic paced Efes with a superb double-double, scoring 16 points and forcing 10 rebounds. Stanko Barac accumulated 12 including 5 for 11 from the floor while Sasha Vujacic contributed 10 points on the night.
Demond Mallet finished with game high 21 points including 6 for 9 from the stripe, but unfortunately for Spirou, his effort failed to spark his team-mates. Only Andre Riddick finished with respectable stats, scoring 9 points and
pulling down 10 rebounds.
Stanko and Sasha fueled an 8-2 opening spurt that allowed Efes to dominate most of the first quarter. However in the last minute of the frame, Mallet and Justin Hamilton drilled back to back three’s to close out the frame only
four behind at 18-14.
However just when the Belgians thought that were within striking distance, Efes kicked off the second quarter with a14-4 burst which elevated the lead to double figures 32-18. Spirou failed terribly to find baskets, whereas on
the other hand, Efes players kept scoring to ensure Efes end the first half of the game with a massive edge of 37-22.
Belgacom put up a good fight in the third frame and outclassed Efes in points- 21 in contrast to Efes’s 15. However, the previous half deficit never allowed them to get ahead of the opponents. By the end of frame, Spirou were 9
points behind 43-52.
Spirou failed to find any rhythm in the first 9 minutes as the scores reached 65-55. The fate of the game was already decided, however Belgacom did not go without a fight and scored quickly in the last minute to give something
to the fans to cheer about.
