Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray wants Teemu Selanne back for another season -NHL offseason Update
One of the most anticipated announcements of this year’s National Hockey League (NHL) offseason is that of legendary player Teemu Selanne’s decision on whether he will be continuing for another season or not. It was set by the 41-year-old that he would make
the decision in September, but according to latest reports, there still is not any conclusive judgment made as of yet.
Anaheim Ducks general manager, Bob Murray, had expressed his plan to use a backup if Selanne was to announce his retirement and that the team was ready to face a huge loss to their line-up. The GM came out on Tuesday, September 6, to assert the media and
public that he wants the Finnish shooter to remain on the team, as it is one of his desires in goodwill for the team, but if his ailing knee does not allow it, there is nothing he can do.
"I'm optimistic, but certainly understand him not wanting to commit unless the knee is straightened out", Murray said. "I'm going to talk to him again later this week and see how he is progressing".
After months of his knee nagging him constantly during game play, which also caused him to miss nearly 10 games of the previous regular season, Selanne underwent surgery in his homeland Finland to repair it and is currently working on it.
“He is working out on and off the ice and trying to strengthen his knee. It’s not quite where he wants it yet”, Murray said Tuesday via email to the media. “He wants to make a decision prior to training camp”.
Selanne is coming out of a one-year deal with Anaheim Ducks, which was worth an estimated $3.25 million and a cap hit of $4.5 million. Currently he stands as an unrestricted free agent and could technically join any team with the best offer.
Anaheim does not have any concerns of the veteran joining any other franchise since he has already expressed his desire to remain with Ducks if he stays. Upcoming developments on whether Selanne will retire or not are expected before the start of the teams’
training camp which is set to kick off in mid-September.
