Anaheim Ducks attempt late comeback but fall to Phoenix Coyotes 5-4 -NHL Match Update
It is bound to be an exciting contest when teams like Anaheim and Phoenix face-off and it was nothing less than that as the Coyotes maintained their lead despite a late comeback attempt by the Ducks to win it, 5-4, Sunday night, October 23, at the Honda
Center in Anaheim, California, United States.
Unfortunately for Anaheim, after having won four straight against teams like New York Rangers, San Jose Sharks and St. Louis Blues, the Ducks have now extended their losing streak to two which started with Dallas earlier on Friday.
Phoenix was also looking to snap their two game losing streak and finally succeeded to earn their third victory of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season.
"It was a big game for us", Coyotes captain Shane Doan said. "We kind of answered the fact that we've played OK (although) we didn't score (in that span). We found a way to get one early to take the pressure off and play with the lead early instead of chasing
it all night".
Surprisingly, both teams were at par at the end of the first 20 minute period after Martin Hanzal scored the inaugural and closing goal before Lubomir Visnovsky’s first and following Ryan Getzlaf’s tie-breaker in the next 42 seconds.
Phoenix went all out in the second period as Boyd Gordon, Lauri Korpikoski and Keith Yandle scored three back-to-back, which ultimately resulted in Anaheim’s defeat.
"The flurry of goals in the second period sunk our hockey club", Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "I'm sure a couple of them Jonas would like to have back. Those are usually signs that the goalie doesn't have it going that night”.
Kurtis Foster scored with less than seven minutes remaining in the second to put Anaheim within reach of two before the period ended but Getzlaf’s goal with 1:08 remaining in the third period made it too late for the team to bounce back and at least level
the match to force an overtime extension.
Ducks play their remaining four games of the month on the road starting with Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday. Phoenix plays the next three at home beginning with Dallas Stars the same day.
