Anaheim Ducks close to signing Bobby Ryan
The Anaheim Ducks are presently in talks with the agents of forward Bobby Ryan about finalizing a new contract for the restricted free agent. The new multi-year contract will reportedly pay the right-winger around $5 million per season.
A previous report stated that Ducks has reached an agreement with Ryan on a five-year contract valued at $5.5 million a season, but it was later discovered that the information was inaccurate.
Talks between Ryan’s agents and the team have been progressing, but a final deal has yet to be reached. Ryan is seeking a three-year deal, while the Ducks are leaning towards a five-year deal.
Last season, Ryan scored 64 points (35 goals, 29 assists) in 81 games. He was the third-highest scorer on the team, with only Ryan Getzlaf (69 points) and Corey Perry (76 points) ahead of him.
Ryan was drafted second overall by the Ducks at the 2005 entry draft, but only became a full-time player in the 2008-09 season. In 168 career games in the National Hockey League, Ryan has amassed a total of 131 points (71 goals, 60 assists). He also has 7 points (5G, 2A) in 13 career playoff games.
The native of Cherry Hill, New Jersey has also made a name for himself on the international stage. He played for the United States in the 2006 World Junior Championships, where the U.S.A. placed fourth after falling to Finland in the bronze medal game. Ryan suited up for his country once again at the 2010 Winter Olympics, where he took home a silver medal after losing to Team Canada in the gold medal game.
In 2008-09, Ryan was one of three finalists for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie player. Goaltender Steve Mason of the Columbus Blue Jackets was the eventual winner, while Ryan and current Toronto Maple Leafs forward Kris Versteeg were the runners-up.
