Anaheim Ducks crush Edmonton Oilers with 5-0 shutout – NHL Update
In a battle between two teams of relatively low reputation this season, Anaheim Ducks' goalie, Jonas Hiller, completed a shutout and Jason Blake, Teemu Selanne, Bobby Ryan and Corey Perry scored to defeat the Edmonton Oilers, 5-0, on Friday, January 13,
2012 at the Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Hiller made 33 saves to get his 100th National Hockey League (NHL) victory, while Perry scored twice to make the day more special for the surging Ducks, who secured their fourth victory in their last five games.
"All four lines are contributing every game. We are really starting to click now. We're obviously quite a few points back. But the more we've starting winning and feeling good about ourselves, I feel like this a team gaining momentum", Ducks’ forward, Andrew
Cogliano, said.
On the other hand, Oilers were handed down their fifth straight loss. Edmonton's coach, Tom Renney, was clearly disappointed and said that the players should have played better.
"I'm not sure what Anaheim did in the game was all that spectacular. We were just brutal", Renney said.
"They don't feel real good about themselves at the moment and they shouldn't”.
The Ducks scored in all the periods, while the change of faces for the Oilers also did not work.
After giving away three goals, Oilers' goalie, Nikolai Khabibulin, was replaced by Devan Dubnyk, who also allowed two further goals.
In the first period, Cam Fowler’s pass was collected by Jason Blake who beat Khabibulin for the first goal of the game.
In the second period, Saku Koivu was cross checked by Sam Gagner for which the latter received a two-minute penalty.
Taking advantage of the shorthanded Oilers, Teemu Selanne came from behind the net and backhanded the puck, which slipped into the net after hitting the goalie.
At 10:54, Ryan Getzlaf and Luca Sbisa assisted Bobby Ryan, who scored his 16th and the game’s third goal.
A few minutes later, Corey Perry tested the new goalie, who stopped a shot, but the puck rebounded and went in once again to Perry, who made sure that the puck ended behind the net this time.
After two periods, the score was 4-0.
In the final period, the Oilers tried a few shots, but Hiller was determined for a shutout and all the efforts of scoring a goal went in vain.
The Oilers were handed another penalty when Jeff Petry was sent off for two minutes for tripping Koivu.
During the power-play, Selanne sent a pass to Perry which deflected off Perry’s stick and entered the net, giving a decisive five-goal lead to the Ducks.
Anaheim Ducks, who are ranked at the 14 number spot in the Western Conference, will play their next game against Vancouver Canucks on Sunday.
The Oilers are ranked one place above the Ducks in the conference and will now take on Los Angeles Kings on Sunday.
