Anaheim Ducks ensure fans of backup plan in case Teemu Selanne retires – NHL offseason Update
According to Anaheim Ducks, they are prepared for the upcoming possible worst case scenario, if their legendary player, Teemu Selanne, decides that he will not be playing another season in the National Hockey League (NHL) and announces his retirement.
After a long hard season for Selanne, who underwent knee surgery in June on his left knee, he continues to rehabilitate and train in his native homeland, Finland, but still, that does not signal any possible return or retirement. Selanne, one of the greatest
hockey players the world has ever seen, expressed his decision to make the highly anticipated announcement sometime in September.
Anaheim Ducks general manager, Bob Murray, made the announcement on Monday, August 8th, that the team was prepared to bear the loss of one of hockey’s greatest players, which would obviously impact the team in a big way as they would lose an 80
point scoring shooter.
"Our job is to prepare our hockey team for the first game of the season", Carlyle said. "If Teemu is there, great. If not, plan B has to go into place. That's a cruel way of looking at it, but that's the reality".
Nevertheless, it is obvious to see that at the age of 41-years-old, Teemu Selanne is entering his final years, if he continues to play and retiring will be inevitable at some point in time. Drafted as the 10th overall pick during round-one of
the 1988 NHL Entry Draft, Selanne established himself of one of the best and most well-rounded players of his time and overall.
Boasting a career record of 1,259 games played and 1,340 points (637 goals, 703 assists) scored, Selanne has earned the right of regarding himself as one of the elite hockey players to have ever existed.
"His body will tell him if he's going to play", Carlyle said. "Teemu has always said he wants to be very active after his playing days, and if he feels his body is telling him to stop playing he'll stop playing. The one thing he's proven is there is life
after 40. He's a joy to be around".
September is a highly awaited month for the hockey world, as fans wait to see what Selanne decides on doing.
