Anaheim Ducks lock Defenseman Cam Fowler with 5-year extension -NHL Update
Cam Fowler will also be staying with the Anaheim Ducks as the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise locked him on for another five years, believed to be worth $20 million despite a looming lockout as the now former collective bargaining agreement came to
an end.
Anaheim Ducks general manager, Bob Murray, made the signing official after announcing it.
"We're excited to sign Cam to a long-term contract," GM Murray said. "He's a character kid with a great chance to become an elite NHL defenseman."
During the offseason, it was believed that Fowler was looking to move on to another club along with Bobby Ryan, but the Ducks managed to woo both of them back, but according to Fowler, he had always wanted to remain with where he started off his career.
With an annual salary cap hit of $4 million, it is not hard to see why Fowler is happy with his new deal with Anaheim Ducks.
"It shows the whole organization has a lot of faith in me, and that's what made it special," Fowler said in a phone interview. "It was more than a fair offer, and I was completely happy with it. Talking about it with my agent and my family, we knew that
this was the best decision for me. We made sure all the pieces fit together, and they absolutely did. I really could not be any more happy with it."
The native of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, was drafted as the 12th overall back in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by Anaheim Ducks. Since then, he has completed two seasons with the Ducks for a total of 158 games and 69 points (15 goals, 54 assists).
Being a defenseman, Anaheim Ducks are looking for a more offensive performance from him next season, when it does come around as the current hockey year is looking gloomy due to the current lockout.
It will definitely be exciting to see how the situation with Cam Fowler will play out as the defender is looking to a breakout season and is definitely hoping that a deal comes into play soon so that the hockey year can begin on time.
