Anaheim Ducks second-round pick John Gibson leaves college, goes for OHL with Kitchener Rangers
John Gibson, Anaheim Ducks 39th overall, second-round pick during the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft in June, had previously committed to the University of Michigan that he would return and play for them, but according to latest
reports, the young goalie has decided to pursue a career in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).
Opting for a more professional career, Gibson chose to develop himself further for his future chance in the major league and is reported to be joining Kitchener Rangers of the OHL, a minor league team which is affiliated with New York Rangers in the NHL.
Playing at college level would not be as much experience to immediately join the pro league which is why Gibson decided to join the minor hockey league on pursuit to the NHL.
Kitchener Rangers general manager and head coach, Steve Spott, confirmed the news as Gibson along with his parents, visited the Ontario city for the first time.
“This is a decision John made, I can tell you that”, Spott said. “John has elected to want to turn pro and try to become an Anaheim Duck as soon as possible. That’s the reason he explained to me that he was coming to juniors: to get a bigger workload, play
more games and prepare to play in the National Hockey League.”
The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States native, had earlier given a verbal commitment to former NHL player, and current coach of the University of Michigan ice hockey team, Michigan Wolves, that he would continue for another season with the NCAA team.
Later on, after months of discussion with parents and former coach’s, Gibson decided it would be better for him to move on to the minor leagues.
"I think it's the best place for me and the best place for my development to get to the next level of my career", Gibson said in an interview. "Obviously, I couldn't have had two better choices”.
Al Jensen, the NHL’s central scouting’s chief goalie scout regarded Gibson’s decision as well planned and good for development. It will surely be exciting to see how Gibson performs in the OHL, on route to the major league.
