Anaheim Ducks shock Detroit Red Wings with 4-0 shutout -NHL Update
Detroit has entered into one of its lowest points this 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season as Red Wings lost their third straight matchup, this time in a stunning 4-0 shutout against Anaheim Ducks, Wednesday night, March 14, 2012, at the
Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
Dominating a team like Detroit, the Ducks should now have enough confidence to work towards gaining a miraculous playoff spot. Anaheim currently sits at the 12th number position in the Western Conference with 71 points and need at least 10 to
grab the eighth and last playoff spot.
"All we can do is win as many games as possible," said Anaheim goalie, Jonas Hiller, who got his fourth shutout of the year. "You have to take care of it on our end, and hope that's going to be enough."
Teemu Selanne got the first goal of the night during round-two nearly midway through for his 23rd of the season. He was followed by Kyle Palmieri at the 15:49 mark for his second, on a breakaway after grabbing the loose puck.
Bobby Ryan secured the contest with his 26th of the year at the 18:55 mark while Palmieri grabbed his second of the night and the insurance goal 1:22 into the fourth.
Being their top pick of the 2009 entry draft, Kyle Palmieri is finally beginning to show signs of having a breakthrough season, but is rather taking it game-by-game first and certainly does have the support of his teammates as well.
"Kyle is a great skater, has an unbelievable shot, really sees the game well," Selanne said. "He doesn't have any weaknesses. He has all the tools, and I'm expecting he's going to be really good in this league."
"He has all the tools and I'm expecting he's going to be really, really good in this League,” Selanne added.
Anaheim has the next two at home and a majority of their remaining games at the Honda Center, giving them a chance to work back up. They host Los Angeles Kings on Friday.
Red Wings continue their Californian road trip against San Jose Sharks Saturday to end it off before returning home.
