Anaheim Ducks sign Teemu Selanne
The Anaheim Ducks have announced that they have signed forward Teemu Selanne to a one-year deal worth $3.25 million. The Finnish star will return to Anaheim for his 12th season with the club.
Selanne has spent the last five seasons with the Ducks organization, winning the Cup with the club in 2007.
After Selanne completed an interview with a Finnish magazine, in which he stated that he was planning on re-signing with Anaheim, it was expected that a deal would be reached between the two sides on Monday.
The ‘Finnish Flash’ has spent the vast majority of his career with the Ducks and over the last five seasons has been extremely effective. In his first season back with the Ducks after the lock-out he managed 90 points in 80 games. The following season he posted an outstanding 48 goals and 94 points for the squad.
Selanne will once again bring his scoring talents to California as he is slotted to appear on the second line with fellow Finn Saku Koivu, and American Jason Blake.
The re-signing of Selanne immediately gives the Ducks a legitimate second line, and a chance at doing some damage in the tough Western Conference.
Selanne made it clear that he would not be coming back for another season if the Ducks began to re-build. However, recent moves made by general manager Bob Murray were said to have sparked the veteran to return for another season.
In his interview with the Finnish magazine Selanne also made it clear that he was talking to Paul Kariya in the hopes that the two would once again re-unite in Anaheim. Although there are no reports to indicate Kariya is ready to sign with the Ducks, there is speculation that Selanne’s commitment to the organization will influence his decision to come to Anaheim.
Last season with Selanne notched 27 goals, and 21 assists for 48 points in just 54 games.
