Anaheim officials will join the Kings’ owners to attend the NBA board meeting: NBA Update
Anaheim officials will join the Kings’ owners to attend the NBA board of governors meeting in the New York City which is scheduled this week. Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait, Anaheim City Manager Tom Wood, and most importantly the Ducks’ owner Henry Samueli, will
be listening to the Kings’ owners, as they present their case for moving their franchise to Anaheim.
The owners, Joe Maloof and Gavin Maloof, have been negotiating with the officials of Anaheim including the Anaheim Arena Management to relocate the franchise. Coming Thursday and Friday, the owners of the Kings franchise will give a formal presentation to
the NBA owners to convince them on their relocation interest.
After staying 26 years in Sacramento, the Kings are planning to go to Orange County and share the Honda Centre with the NHL's Anaheim Ducks.
The Maloof Brothers and the Honda Centre’ operator, Henry Samueli, are still not assured and have been raising concerns over the fact that they do not have enough support from the NBA management. The key obstacle in this move is to satisfy the NBA management
who will be voting for this relocation.
Anaheim officials, Samueli, Tait, Wood and Michael Schulman, the Chairman of the Anaheim Arena Management will be answering some of the questions from the NBA’s relocation committee. This relocation committee will be studying deeply the relocation proposal
and will be making the final recommendations in front of the board-members within 120 days.
Anaheim Mayor seemed very passionate about this move as he said, “It will be my honour to represent the city of Anaheim as I proudly let them know that this city is NBA-ready, I look forward to a positive outcome in New York.”
The real drama of this move picked up when the Maloof Brothers failed to secure any financial back-up for the new proposed arena in Sacramento. The current Power Balance Pavilion has been outdated and they were in search of a new court with the best possible
facilities for their players and team officials. Consequently they had to look at another feasible venue. The Anaheim arena, known as the Honda Centre, ultimately turned out to be the best option. The arena boasts of 83 luxury suites with state-of-the-art
facilities as compared to Power Balance Pavilion with just 30 suites, plus an over-aged building.
The Honda centre is currently the home venue of the National Hockey League’s Anaheim Ducks. The Anaheim City Council also has announced the approval of US$75 million in lease-revenue bonds if the Kings will make it into the Anaheim.
