This has happened a couple years ago and I went to the hospital and they said nothing.. But now its kind of a lot of blood.. The toilet water is actually a redish color.. Its only when I have a bowel movement.. Does anyone know what this could be?.. Its only painful for a second.. But its a nice amount of blood.. Should I go to the ER or just see if it continues or what?..

  1. it could be internal hemmroids

  2. i would go to the er and have it checked out you may have just pop a blood vessel

  3. Hi, I have a similar problem, it could jst be hemaroides (piles) either eternal or internal, or  a tear in the a**s, however go get it checked out. just to put your mind at ease.liz

  4. It sounds like either hemorrhoid's  or blood vessels bursting or anal fissures,  not life threatening just something you shouldn't take to lightly , you  might need more fiber in your diet to keep the stools softer.*

  5. Yeah, I don't think that is normal...Unless something changed from your diet, and you're not getting enough fiber intake or drinking enough water, then it's definitely something you should go see a doctor about.

  6. If I were you, I'd go to my doctor. That doesn't sound good, but you could've just popped a blood vessel or something.

  7. Anal bleeding of any kind is NOT normal. I suggest you make a doctor appointment for sometime this week and if not this week then go to the ER.

  8. I worked in the medical field for over 15 years.  Please don't be embarrassed by this.  This happens to a lot of people.

Yes, you should seek medical attention.  If you a really afraid you are bleeding too much, then go to the E.R.  However if you feel like it can wait for a few days, then make an appointment with your general practitioner.

They are probably going to have you do a fecal blood test.  They give you a cardboard thing, for you to take home.  Next time you have a bowel movement, you smear samples of your stool in the circles on the cardboard (don't worry, full instructions come with the kit).  Then you package it up and it gets sent off to the lab.

The lab looks at it, to determine where the blood might be coming from...fresh blood, old blood, cancer, ulcer, other disease, ect.

That (the fecal blood test) is almost always the very first test that is preformed.  It's very rare that someone with rectal bleeding is put strait into the hospital (but it does happen).

Avoid taking aspirin right now (increases bleeding). Eat mild and bland foods right now.  Try to avoid grease.  Avoid soda, and caffeine.  Drink plenty of water, and real fruit juice.

Do you have medical insurance?  Many insurance companies now offer a 24 hour a day phone number you can call and speak with a nurse.

Side note...have you been eating a lot of beets, red jello, or red Kool Aid?  That can make it look like blood in the stool.

By the way, you stated "only painful for a second."  That's actually a good thing.  It probably means an irritated hemoriod, rather than something scarey, like cancer.
