Analyst talks price of new Sony and Microsoft console, expects it to arrive by the end of this year
The next-generation Sony and Microsoft consoles are likely to arrive in the market at a price of $350, according to the Robert W. Baird industry watcher Colin Sebastian.
The industry analyst issued a note to the investors, predicting that the highly-anticipated PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 could debut at a lower price than what the previous Sony and PlayStation consoles arrived in the market at.
Sony brought Xbox 360 in the market in 2005 with a price tag of $400 on it, whereas Sony put a price tag of $500 on the PlayStation 3 when it made its debut in the market in 2006.
Things are going to be significantly different this time around, however, as the various conversations with a range of distributors and game developers during the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show last week have led Sebastian to make an estimate of the price
at which the new consoles will be offered.
According to Sebastian, the conversations that he had with the video game developers and distributors yielded "interesting takeaways with respect to next-generation game development and more broadly, the intensifying battle for the living room."
He also said the developers will have an easier time to adapt to the upcoming consoles, with the learning curve to be much shorter than what it was for the previous consoles.
Sebastian also talked about the point that has the gaming industry and community really excited and frustrated, the time at which two of the biggest companies in the industry will unveil their next-generation consoles.
According to him, both Sony and Microsoft are likely to hold events pertaining to their next-generation consoles prior to this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).
He said that the two companies will move on to hype Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 at the E3 before they start shipping their respective consoles to the market in the final months of this year.
The industry analysts have been criticising the likes of Sony and Microsoft for quite some time now because of the extended life cycles of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, while asserting that the next-generation consoles have been long overdue.
