Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Su-Wei Hsieh amongst the biggest movers in the rankings – Tennis News
Russian tennis ace, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, is facing tough time at the courts in the recent past and has dropped five places in the updated list of rankings published on Monday. She is now ranked at the 20th ranked
in the new rankings list and becomes one of the prime movers of the Women Tennis Association’s (WTA) catalogue.
She is just 20-years-old at the moment so there is ample time in her career to make a comeback and break into the Top-10 players of the world and accomplish her childhood dream. She started her New Year at Brisbane as a seventh
seed contestant and defeated the injury-stricken Slovak contestant, Polona Hercog, in the opening round before going down to the inferior ranked Estonian participant, Kaia Kanepi, in the following round.
Apia Sydney International was another forgettable tournament for her. She was dumped from the event in the opening round in straight sets by the German tennis professional, Andrea Petkovic. She only lasted a couple of rounds in
the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open. Vania King of American proved a bit tougher contestant in an enthralling second round three-setter.
First round exits in the Qatar Total Open and Dubai Duty Free Championships didn’t help her cause at all and now she sees herself on the verge of dropping out of the Top-20 players in the world. It has been a tough year so far
for the Russian who has not been able to find strong footing at all. With a record of 2-5, she enters one of the biggest tournaments of the year, the Indian Wells, and hopefully will look to boost her rankings with some better performances.
No changes were witnessed in the Top-10 rankings in the women’s category with Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova holding on to top three rankings in the world respectively. BMW Malaysian Open has been a tough
tournament for the ladies especially for the top seeds who were knocked-out in the early stages of the tournament. Jelena Jankovic of Serbia who was the second seed wildcard entrant made it to the semi-final stage but lost to the Croatian participant, Petra
Martic.
The winner of the tournament Su-Wei Hsieh jumped multiple spots from 123
to the 78th spot. It is one of the biggest jumps in the recent past. She came all the way from the qualifiers and with the help of a couple of retirements won the maiden WTA title of her life.
