Anastasia Pivovarova defeats Yaroslava Shvedova at the 2011 Grand Prix De SAR
Anastasia Pivovarova of Russia scored any easy victory against compatriot Yaroslava Shvedova in the second round match of the Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem. The Russian pro defeated her opponent with a score line
of 6-2, 7-6(5), taking one hour and forty minutes of play.
Pivovarova, ranked 116th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) singles rankings list, kicked off the tournament by putting in her appearance at the first round match, where she defeated Zahrae El Allami of Morocco
in straights set before claiming her second round match victory against Shvedova.
In the match, the 23-year-old Shvedova established herself as a better player, committing just two double faults while her opponent committed six. Both players didn’t score any ace in the first set, but Shvedova managed to make
58 percent first serves and won 45 percent of points on her first serves and 25 percent of points on her second serves. Pivovarova on the other hand scored 54 percent of her first serves and gained a better winning percentage of 71 percent on her first serves
and 50 percent on her second serves. Without wasting a single opportunity, Pivovarova clinched majority of the points in every field and completely blew away her opponent with a 6-2 score line.
The second set saw an abrupt change in the scores as Pivovarova’s first serves percentage dropped to seven percent and she only won a meager 64 percent on her 78 percent first serves. Shvedova on the other hand continued to play
tremendously and scored 10 percent points more than her first set’s 54 percent and took the set into a tie-breaker. Unluckily Shvedova didn’t have much of a chance during the tie-break, and gave away the set with a 5-7 score. After winning this match, Pivovarova
now leads their head-to-head by 1-0.
Pivovarova will be playing against compatriot Dinara Safina in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Safina brushed off American Jill Craybas and the eighth seed, Alize Cornet in the first two rounds to reach the last eight.
