Anastasia Rodionova rallies past Veronica Cepede Royg 6-1, 6-2
World number 163, Anastasia Rodionova of Australia, sidelined the Paraguayan, Veronica Cepede Royg, 6-1, 6-2, in the final qualifying round of US Open, on the hard courts of the Flushing Meadows on Friday.
The Paraguayan tennis professional was unable to sustain her initial serve in the set and the Rodionova secured the opportunity and won the initial three games in a row, bringing the scores to 3-love. The Aussie did not allow
Royg to settle down, as she progressed forward by clinching all the game, winning the initial set with a breadstick at 6-1.
In the next set, both players successfully maintained their first serves games and equalized each other’s scores to 1-1. Ranked 216 on the world charts, the Paraguayan contender secured the initial lead in the set. Rodionova
gained momentum and won the rest of the games later on, claiming the set with a 6-2 score line.
The 20-year-old, Royg had a low first serve percentage of 59. She could not strike a single ace against her rival and double faulted seven times. However, the Aussie professional managed to secure 66 percent of the first
serve point, smashed eight aces against her rival and double faulted once.
Tatjana Malek prevails over Yung-Jan Chan 6-4, 2-0
25-year-old German, Tatjana Malek defeated the Chinese native Yung-Jan Chan in final qualifier of the US Open held on the hard courts of New York on Friday by 6-4, 2-0.
Both the participants equalized their scores to 1-1 by holding their initial serves in the match. The German contender did not allow her rival to settle down and grabbed the remaining points to build the scores to 4-2 by
the sixth game. Chan struggled hard to upset Malek but miserably lost the set by 4-6.
The Taiwanese professional withdrew from the match due to injury, letting the world number 141 to an easy victory. Chan exhibited an unusually weak performance, as she was unable to hold her initial serve in the set and the
set score was 0-2 against her favour when she had to pull out of the competition in an unfortunate manner.
The German participant had an average first serve percentage of 58, bombarding her rival with two aces and double faulting once during the match. On the contrary, the Taiwanese had a relatively better first serve percentage
of 67. She only managed to hit one ace and committed one double in the entire match.
Malek will be contesting against Akgul Amanmuradova in the first round of the tournament.
