Anastasia Rodionova overwhelms Iryna Bremond in the opening round – PTT Pattaya Open 2012
Russian tennis veteran, Anastasia Rodionova, faced no real difficulties in ousting the superior ranked French competitor, Iryna Bremond, in the opening round of the PTT Pattaya Open on Monday. The 98th ranked Russian
took merely 75 minutes of play to register her third victory of the current season and eased through to the round of 16 at the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International tournament. The final scores were 6-4, 6-0, in favour of Rodionova.
The world number 95, Bremond, offered some resistance in the earlier parts of the game but it was an all-Russian show in the second set of the match. Rodionova had to manoeuvre her way through the opener but she ignited her rage
mode in the next set to go for a six-game rampage. She was absolutely unplayable in the second set and concluded victory in the most assertive fashion.
On the other hand, Bremond was found lagging behind the 29-year-old Russian in every segment of the game. Her error-ridden game play made her cough six double faults on crucial moments of the contest and she utterly failed to register
a single break point in the entire matchup. The French had five opportunities to crack a serve break but she frittered away all the priceless points to remain at a disadvantage in the entire matchup.
Rodionova delivered 61 per cent of her serve on target and reeled off 24 out of 30 first serve points to drive her opponent out of the competition. She had nine break opportunities and converted four of them en route to victory.
The unseeded Russian was off to an ideal start in the opening set, breaking the French serve in the third game to lead 2-1 and kept pressing her opponent to commit more mistakes. She held her lead with minimal effort and eventually
went on to seal the first set at 6-4.
Dropping the opener in a dismal manner, Bremond looked absolutely dejected in the following set and could barely execute her return shots. She utterly failed to hold her serve in a single game and suffered three successive break
point conversions from the belligerent Russian to finish the contest on the losing side in the end. Rodionova dropped merely one point her first serve in the set and rocketed away to victory by claiming the second set with a bagel. She will wither face the
fourth seed Maria Kirilenko or Casey Dellacqua in the second round of the PTT Pattaya Open later this week.
