Anastasia Zueva clinches Women’s 50m breast-stroke title: Day five – 2011 FINA World Championships
Anastasia Zueva of Russia clinched the title of Women’s 50m back-stroke meet on day five of the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) organised 2011 World Championships on Thursday, July 28, in Shanghai, China.
Zueva won the title of the event in an impressive time of 27.79 seconds. Zueva’s time remained just 0.73 seconds above the championship and world mark of 27.06 seconds, set by Zhao Jing of China at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
The gold medallist was followed by Japanese swimmer, Aya Terakawa, who missed the gold medal with a slight difference of 0.14 seconds and ended her sprint in a second fastest time of 27.93 seconds for silver medal. She was followed by Melissa Franklin of
USA, who stayed only 0.01 seconds behind the silver medallist and occupied the podium for the bronze medal, by submitting a time of 28.01 seconds.
In the meantime, Chang Gao of China remained only 0.05 seconds behind her foregoing swimmer and emerged on the finishing wall for the fourth finest stop of the single lap race, by reporting in a nice time of 28.06 seconds. She was followed by Emily Seebohm
of Australia, who remained just 0.01 seconds behind Gao and concluded her swim in a time of 28.07 seconds. Julia Wilkinson of Canada presented a struggling effort to secure the fifth fastest spot, but she remained only 0.02 seconds behind Seebohm.
In addition, Wilkinson was joined by Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus in the second-half of the race, where they both fought a neck-to-neck battle. Both swimmers remained unsuccessful in out-touching each other and posted a same time of 28.09 seconds for
the sixth position. They were trailed by Mercedes Peris Minguet of Spain, who stayed 0.33 seconds behind them and ended her swim after she touched the finishing wall in a time of 28.42 seconds.
The winner of the respective meet, Zueva, expressed happiness after winning the title of the event, whereas, the winners were awarded with medals and accolades for their remarkable swims after the completion of the session.
